Open Question: What would cause my car's mpg to drop from 32/35 to 20?

22 November 2008, 12:18 pm

I own a 2001 Toyota corolla that usually gets anywhere from 30 to 35 mpg depending on how much highway and stop and go I drive. However I just had to fill up since the gas gage was below half way and I had only gone 150 miles. Usually I fill up a little less than 1/4th left and my car is usually around 350 miles until I fill up. And usually around 200 or 220 around the halfway mark it varies though. However this time when I filled up all the way, it clicked at 7.2 gallons and I had only gone 150 miles since the last full fill up. I have a 12 or 13.2 gallon tank. What would cause the gas EPA and mpg to drop like that? It has been very cold the last few weeks on the east coast and I've used the heat a lot. Could the heat sap that much gas? I didn't think it was that big of a difference and I've never noticed that before. The AC doesn't even sap that much in the summer. If that's the case I'll stop using the heat. I'm not a car expert but I'm slowly learning the basics. Does any of you guys know what could be causing this? I don't notice any leakage but I'll double check. the last time I filled up was about 3 weeks ago and all the traveling I did since then was around town so that's mostly stop and go kind of traveling. I've just never had a mpg this low. Any checks or maintenance I should look into? Anything I should check or look for?... Read More »
